What is Microsuction?
Ear microsuction is a safe and effective procedure used to clear excessive wax and debris from the ear canal. This is often used as a last resort for cases in which ear wax does not clear after 2-6 days of using wax softening agents.
To begin, we examine your ear canal with special magnifying glasses to assess whether there is wax build up or any other reasons you may be experiencing discomfort.
If ear wax is causing a blockage, a thin tube attached to the microsuction machine is placed inside the ear canal.
Microsuction involves the use of low-pressure suction to remove materials blocking the ear canal under high-power magnification and bright illumination. You may hear a whooshing or whistling noise as the wax is removed. If you experience discomfort at any point, let us know. At Melbourne Microsuction Clinic, our registered nurses perform this procedure, ensuring thorough and gentle removal of earwax and foreign bodies from the ear canal.
Sometimes the symptoms you are experiencing may not be caused by a blockage of wax. Our registered nurses work closely alongside our team of GPs, so you may be assessed for other causes while at the clinic.
Why Choose Microsuction?
You may see your doctor for ear microsuction when you are experiencing the following symptoms:
- changes in hearing
- tinnitus/ ringing in your ears
- ear discomfort or pain
- feeling like there is a lot of pressure in your ears
- itchy ears
Ear microsuction offers several advantages over traditional methods such as syringing. It relies on a vacuum movement to remove earwax, eliminating the need for water or messy solutions. This method is cleaner, safer, and minimizes the risk of complications such as infection and further damage to the ear canal. Additionally, microsuction is suitable for individuals with conditions like infection or perforated eardrums, where syringing may not be recommended. Ear microsuction is often faster than other methods of ear wax removal and patients generally experience immediate relief from symptoms of deafness, pain, and pressure following microsuction.
What if the Microsuction Doesn't Work?
Sometimes we cannot remove all of your ear wax. This can happen due to the wax being too hard and stuck, there being multiple layers of wax, or due to patient discomfort.
When this occurs a follow up appointment may be required and this will be discussed with the doctor.
