Preparing for Your Appointment

Prior to attending your appointment at Melbourne Microsuction you will be required to use wax softening agents for 3-5 days. Simple olive oil works well, or you can purchase a product such as waxsol or cerumol from the chemist. Place the drops in your affected ear and lie on your side for 5minutes 2-3 times a day, for 3-5 days before your appointment. This will soften the ear wax and make it easier to remove and reduce the likelihood of requiring a second appointment. If you are aware that you have an ear infection or a perforated ear drum (a hole in your ear) DO NOT put anything in your ears - please call us to discuss. Please download and complete the Patient Information and Consent Form here.

Potential Risks and Side Effects

As with every procedure, there are some common and not-so-common risks and side effects. Following your ear microsuction appointment you may experience: -dizziness or vertigo -reduction in hearing -coughing and eyes watering -infection and injury to ear
Dizziness or Vertigo
This can occur during or shortly after the procedure as microsuctioning reduces the temperature of the ear canal. This rapid change can make you feel faint or dizzy. These symptoms are generally short lived and will subside rapidly post procedure.
Reduction in Hearing
The microsuction machine makes a whooshing or whistling sound which can be very loud for some people. Occassionally this can cause temporary hearing loss as the muscles in the ear contract to protect from the noise. These symptoms are generally short lived and will subside rapidly post procedure.
Coughing and Eyes Watering
This can occur during the procedure if the small tube inserted into the ear canal irritates the ear and causes a reflex. These symptoms are generally short lived and will subside rapidly post procedure.
Infection and Injury to Ear
Very rarely infection or injury to the ear can occur. This can happen any time a foreign object is introduced into the body and is often due to sudden movement of the patient. All of our staff are well trained and all of our equipment is single use and replaced after each patient.
